Shelburne County Archives & Genealogical Society

The inaugural meeting of the Shelburne County Archives & Genealogical Society was held on 21 September 1987 at the home of Eleanor and Jim Smith. It was incorporated under the Societies Act on 28 September 1987. The founding executive was: Eleanor Smith President; Hattie Perry, Vice-President; William S. Camp, Secretary; Joseph R. Ross, Treasurer; Pauline Smith, Assistant Treasurer; Trudy Atkinson, Publicity Convenor. The mission statement of the Society was then and still is to collect, to preserve, to promote, and to make available to the public, records that pertain to the history of the people of Shelburne County. To create finding aids, indexes and databases which provide easy access to these records.

The Society has produced many publications on Shelburne families and genealogical information, as well as a documented family history of 47,000 Shelburne County residents/or descendents of a former resident (compiled, partially as a result of queries, by volunteer genealogist, Eleanor Smith). The Society has also received numerous awards for its work.
