Colchester Historical Museum & Archives
The Colchester Historical Society was organized on 23 February 1954, with Dr.L.A. DeWolfe, a pioneer in the field of education, as the first president. The Society was formed with five main objectives in mind: to gather, compile, and preserve written and printed documents of historic value and interest; to gather and record stories until now unwritten, which exist only in the memory of older people; to work toward a museum and library which will house objects and documents thus collected; to promote the marking of historic sites within the county by suitable plaques, cairns, or otherwise; and to cooperate with civic officials in civic celebrations of an historic nature. The dream of a museum became a reality in February 1976 when the Colchester Historical Museum was opened in the former Science Building of the Provincial Normal College in Truro. In the following years the document library progressed to its current status as a modern Archives, with a full time Archivist. The following is a list of just some of the types of records housed in the Archives: original records of businesses, societies, schools, individuals and families of Colchester County, an extensive photograph collection, census, vital statistics, deeds, funeral records, cemetery records history files, and related publications.
