Ethics of Acquisition And Appraisal
Patti Bannister, Archivist, Sisters of Charity Halifax Congregational Archives
The ethical standards employed in archival acquisition is based on
competing priorities, needs, and resources. Each institution,
regardless of size, approaches each new acquisition scenario prepared to juggle a number of competing issues: institutional mandate, available resources, donor expectations, researcher expectations, legislative guidelines, and the co-operative acquisition strategy. These issues may change from one acquisition to another, but the ethical juggling act remains the same. This session will explore the competing elements within the acquisition process and the role that the CNSA Co-operative Acquisition Strategy plays.

Art and Archives: Between the Past and the Future
Aimee Brown and Tonia Di Risio, Anna Leonowens Gallery, NSCAD University
A discussion addressing how art and archives intertwine.  How does an art object differ from an archival item, can holdings be considered information and fine art simultaneously?  If so, what actions must be taken to ensure that preservation is adequately pursued? We will also use a case study from the NSCAD Gallery Archives to look at how works of art and archives may be used to enhance research content. Archives are often employed by researchers and contemporary artists to discuss narrative, collective memory, and identity; this talk will also present examples of art works where archives feature prominently as a resource and an artistic form.

Chase Exhibition Hall

Archives and Maps
James Boxall, Director, Geographic Information Systems Centre, Dalhousie University
This session will focus on the basics of acquiring and assessing cartographic materials for inclusion in a collection. It will explore the nature of maps and how they form a very significant portion of our cultural heritage as communication and information tools. Participants will come to learn how maps are of value to researchers, educators and the general user. The nature of care and preservation will be talked about as well. After this session, you will not look at maps in the same way, and you'll never be lost again.

Lunch on your own - explore the different epicurean delights within walking distance of the conference site!

Peter, as both an archivist and manager of Canada’s oldest courthouse (a museum and a National Historic Site), will speak on the problems of archives receiving unwanted (or even wanted!) artifacts.  This session will be directed towards both archives & research centres connected with museums and archives with no museum connections.  The session will speak to the importance of clearly developed and articulated archival acquisition policies and museum collection policies, offering suggestions for dealing with those artifacts if they are retained.
