General description:

Providing good reference service to archival users is a key function of any archives. If done well, it can increase use, improve community relations and generate some revenue. If done poorly, it can damage reputations, decrease use and sour relationships. This workshop will help you begin or improve your reference services and covers such topics as:

  • access policies and other required documentation
  • how to conduct reference interviews
  • copyright and other reproduction considerations
  • professional ethics
  • applying donor restrictions
  • dealing with sensitive material in your holdings
  • managing reference services via email, phone, in person, mail and the web
  • security
  • collecting statistics on use

This workshop is part of the CNSA Archival Certificate Program.

Learning Method:

Learning is done through a combination of lecture, personal reading, small group discussion, and practical exercises over a 2-day period in an informal, friendly atmosphere.

Prior knowledge required:

Introduction to Archives workshop or experience working with archival records is an asset but not required. Please contact the Archives Advisor for more information.
